Bijou Festival Filmmakers

JAMES BOWMAN

Becoming an animator has always been my dream since childhood. It was when I saw the film, Watership Down, that I knew animating was what I wanted to do. This, along with the artistic endeavors of my older brothers, kept me wanting to create or build whatever was within my imagination. Eventually, my journey led to the MFA Computer Art program at the School of Visual Arts, where I studied 3D animation. I started out my animation career as an intern with a small animation company called C-Traze Studios. This led to working as a production assistant on a sci-fi TV pilot with 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. But ultimately, it was when my graduate thesis film, “Life's Journey” was accepted to the Urbanworld Film Festival, that I slowly began to see myself as a filmmaker. Along with Urbanworld, Life's Journey was screened through the likes of the Pan-African, Ohio Independent, ImageNation film festivals and more. I’ve gone on to create numerous other animated short films, which have been seen at various festivals and screening events. And I am very proud to have my latest animated music video, Train Ride, featured at Bijou. What I tried to do with Train Ride, both musically and visually, was to take the audience away from everyday life for a few moments. This could very well be a vision of a house head becoming lost in the music. It has always been my hope that my creative works allow the audience to visualize and think about the many aspects of life and living.

AARON CHARLES BUTLER

From the tumultuous backdrop of Oak Cliff, Texas, rises a visionary director, educator, and entrepreneur whose narrative defies convention at every turn. I am Aaron C. Butler, and my story is a tapestry woven from the threads of adversity, resilience, and unrelenting ambition. While my formative years were colored by hardship and struggle, they served as the raw material for my creative expression. Music was my first muse, pulling me away from the clutches of gang life and destitution. Despite contending with homelessness and a turbulent family life, I found solace in the creative arts. Through grit and self-determination, I built a dynamic career in audio-visual sciences—a domain I entered with a certification rather than a traditional college degree. As a director, I've helmed impactful stage plays, including Aaron Sorkin's "A Few Good Men," crafting worlds that resonate with authenticity and emotional depth. Venturing into film and television, I've produced over ten productions, including the web series hit "Darken Lovely," each a testament to my storytelling prowess and technical skill.

Though my heart beats to the rhythm of cinematography and visual science, my creative journey has serendipitously led me into the realm of documentary filmmaking. This new genre presents an exciting challenge, offering yet another avenue for me to apply my unique blend of artistic vision and technical acumen.

Except for that one time she ate two Wendy’s burgers, nuggets, fries, Dunkin Donuts, and drank a large soda all in one night. If you cannot find Janae, you can easily locate her in either a Barnes and Noble or her mom’s kitchen. Her favorite aspects of animation production are story development, character design. and background design.
